Style American Kaeru-Do Karate

Relocated and Reinvented, Universal Sport Karate now exists in Joplin, Missouri. Sensei Gage Hanlon, owner of Universal Sport Karate in Glenwood, Iowa, moved to Joplin to finish his college studies at Missouri Southern State University. As such, he has opened up Universal Sport Karate to Joplin and the surrounding communities. Universal Sport Karate is currently a member of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. Sensei Gage is also part of the Young Professionals Network.

Universal Sport Karate has a completely renovated curriculum compared to its previous offerings. This new curriculum is 100% based off of the style that Sensei Gage created himself, American Kaeru-Do Karate. Meaning "Way of Change," Sensei Gage has combined all of his training, both physical and scholar, of various martial arts to create as inclusive of a style as any other out there. While based heavily in the practices of Okinawan and Japanese Karate, AKDK also includes philosophies and other key elements from styles such as Jeet Kune Do, Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Capoeira, and Muay Thai, along with philosophies directly from Sensei Gage himself. Compared to its previous curriculum, Universal Sport Karate's AKDK curriculum has a more inclusive training regime, aiming to teach students about throws, takedowns, and ground fighting, as well as stand up striking. AKDK also has adopted the Renshi, Kyoshi, and Hanshi Title Rank system that most karate styles have, as well as having Soke to represent the founder or head of the style (currently Sensei Gage.)

The Regular Program is the program that all new students enter into. In this program, they learn about all that the American Kaeru-Do Karate curriculum has to offer. Such materials include Drills, Techniques, One Steps, Street Scenarios, Katas, Bo Katas, and Sparring (after achieving 9th Kyu Junior Yellow rank.) The Regular Program has three different Age Group classes. These are: Tiny Dragons (3 to 5 year olds); Kids Kickin' It (6 to 12 year olds); and Teens & Adults (13 years old and up.)

Along with its Regular Program that teaches AKDK, Universal Sport Karate also offers two Exclusive Programs; Competition Team and Black Belt Club. Competition Team, as its name suggests, is for those who want to compete regularly on a national level. Most competitions the team travels to are in the Midwest region, but the team also travels to other tournaments, including NASKA events. Black Belt Club, on the other hand, is an opportunity for those who want to go above and beyond the bare minimum learning curve of how to properly instruct. Those in Black Belt Club have a higher chance of testing sooner into Shodan rank and higher, thanks to the various materials covered on how to instruct students and classes.

Besides classes that teach AKDK, Universal Sport Karate also offers its services for self defense clinics. These clinics are great for businesses, schools, or communities as a whole. Each clinic is tailored to discuss relevant material to its intended audience. Kids Self Defense Awareness focuses more on escaping from an adult, while Women's Self Defense looks more at how to strike effective areas against an assailant or kidnapper.

No matter what the martial arts need, Universal Sport Karate can help to satisfy it.
